第1140期：几乎每个国家都有 sacred cow

不管你有没有去过印度，大概都知道牛在印度的地位非常高。牛走在路上，所有人车都得给它让行。牛在印度被称为 sacred cow.

为什么印度人把牛当成圣牛呢？

简单地解释，in India, cows are considered to be a manifestation of the Mother Goddess and a sacred animal that provides life-sustaining milk.

印度教（Hinduism）把牛叫作 Gomatha (Mother Cow)，象征着世间至高的 purity and virtue. 所以印度人不仅不吃牛肉，还对牛进行全方位的崇拜。

信仰印度教的人（Hindus）不吃牛肉，但是可以喝牛奶。到2013年，印度已是全世界最大的牛奶生产国。

除了牛肉和牛奶，还有一样东西——牛粪（cow dung）也是被崇拜的。

在新鲜牛粪落地之前接住，和上草药，拌成一种东西叫 holy ash，被 Hintus 用于宗教和祭祀仪式（pooja）。

牛尿（urine of the cow）可以入药，跟牛粪一起可以做成治疗皮肤病的本土药。

说了这么多，大概你能体会到牛在印度的神圣地位了。

因为牛的地位如此崇高如此独特，所以谁也不能批评牛，所以英语中就有了今天我们要讲的这个说法 sacred cow. 

A “sacred cow” is any program, policy, or person that is regarded as being beyond attack or untouchable.

One that is often unreasonably immune from criticism or opposition

制度、体制、人、政策、风俗、现象，不管是什么，不允许任何批评，不允许任何反对意见，英语就称之为 sacred cow. 

例如：

The old government program has become a sacred cow.

这个意义上的 sacred cow可以简单理解为 taboo，尤其在政治领域。很多国家都有其复杂的问题，有些很敏感，一般人不愿意去碰，因为很麻烦。有些是干脆不让说。
