第1621期：本命年英文到底怎么说？

每个人一生中都要经历本命年，运气好的话，有可能一辈子会过8次，甚至9次。

在网上搜索你基本上只会得到一个很多国内网站传抄的答案 the year of fate，但我在英语国家的网站上没看到这个短语的解释跟本命年有什么关系。
本命年又叫生肖年，其实完全可以简单地翻译成 one’s zodiac year，你随便找个英美人试试看佛老的这个说法他们能不能听懂。我跟几个外国同事试过，只有一个一下子没明白，我略加解释他就大概知道怎么回事了：Every 12th year since my year of birth is my zodiac year – the Chinese lunar calendar follows a circle of 12 zodiac animal signs.
你的 zodiac year 就是 the year of your Chinese zodiac animal sign (when you are 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, or 108 years old, if you could.)

这里面有中国古代命理学的一些理论，较复杂，此不赘述。
如果有歪果仁好奇地问你“Why are people nervous about their zodiac years? Why do they wear red underwear and red socks?
你可以说：
Because Chinese astrology posits that the God of Age (Tai Sui) would take offense at people who have the same earthly branch in the name of their zodiac that year.
但我估计一般歪果仁还是不能理解。你可以接着解释：Like the God of Taurus（金牛座）doesn’t like people born under Taurus.
那个歪果仁可能会接着问你：Shouldn’t the God of Taurus love and protect those born under Taurus? Why are they pissed off?
这个对话就不轻松了。（这一段纯属胡思乱想，别较真儿，莫当真。）
【注】
1. 人的本命年地支跟当年年份地支相同，称为犯太岁（offending the God of the Year).
2. 天干的英文是 heavenly stems; 地支的英文是 earthly branches.
3. 十天干是：甲、乙、丙、丁、戊、己、庚、辛、壬、癸。 十二地支是：子、丑、寅、卯、辰、巳、午、未、申、酉、戌、亥。
例如，2023年用天干地支表示是“癸卯”年，癸（音同“鬼”）是天干，卯是地支，每个年份都是由一个天干和一个地支两个字表示的。
卯在12属相里就是兔，这个卯字跟今年年份的地支卯字一样，当值年神不高兴。所谓的犯太岁简单说就是这个意思。
4. 十个天干和十二个地支这22个字组合有60种，所以六十年称为一甲子。
5. 每个年份，每个月份，每个日期，每个时辰都对应一个天干字+一个地支字，每个人出生时的年月日时就对应八个字，所以叫生辰八字（the eight characters of one’s horoscope). *其实翻译成horoscope也不对，但不是本文重点，此不赘述。
