I often joke, “Why are cats and dogs happier than human beings? Because cats and dogs don’t read the news.”

Three temptations torture people:

Sexual desire

Pride

Lust for wealth

All the misfortunes of mankind come from these three cravings. Without them, people would live in happiness.

– F. Robert de Lamennais(羅貝爾·德拉梅內), French Catholic priest, philosopher and political theorist (June 19, 1782 – Feb 27, 1854.)

Sexual desire

Pride

Lust for wealth

酒 – wine/liquor/alcohol

色 – sex

财 – avarice

气 – temper

人生四戒/四害 – the four cardinal vices

Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously.

A person may be proud without being vain.

Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity to what we would have others think of us. – Jane Austen “Pride and Prejudice”
