第210期：wherewithal

今天佛老去了香港书展，跟去年一样有意外惊喜，虽然有点累，但收获颇丰。今天有点晚了，我们来学一个比较高级的词wherewithal.

这个词至少有四种发音，我们知道两个最常用的即可:[wɛə.wɪˈðl]; [ˈwɛə.wɪ.ðɔːl].

什么意思呢？

The ability and means required to accomplish some task.

完成某件事所需的能力或手段。可以简单理解为necessary resource/means，主要指钱。

来看个例句：

I would like to help your project, but I do not have the wherewithal.

我想在你的项目上帮你，但我没（时间或资源）法帮你。

这个词最早出现于16世纪，有where和withal两个词组成，withal的意思就是with. 所以你可以简单理解wherewithal就是where with，类似汉语中的“拿什么……“的意思。
