第232期：ovation
今天我们来学一个很热闹的词ovation.
这个词几乎总是跟standing连用的——a standing ovation，意思是“全体起立长时间鼓掌欢呼”。
剑桥英语大辞典的解释是：
an occasion when a crowd of people expresses great enjoyment and/or approval of something with loud and long clapping
例句：
Mr. Jobs was given a standing ovation as he arrived on stage for the launch event at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, San Francisco.
乔布斯先生到达位于旧金山苹果公司总部发布现场时，受到了全场热烈的起立鼓掌欢迎。（*台湾国语称Jobs为“贾布斯”，有趣。）
全场起立长时间鼓掌欢呼这种场面经常出现在奥斯卡颁奖晚会现场和某些名人演讲的现场。据说这个做法源自古罗马。
古罗马时代，如果一个将军带兵打了个大胜仗，能称之为triumph的那种大胜，皇帝会搞很大的场面和仪式来犒赏三军。但如果胜仗没那么大，只是一个victory，民众就用standing ovation的形式夹道欢迎凯旋归来的将士。
普通的鼓掌叫applaud, clapping. 口语中也说give someone a (big) hand. 都不如ovation隆重。但我想这种standing ovation的场合是不能吹口哨的。这就像德云社剧场里观众对相声演员演的那声“噫~~~~~”（注意，“噫”发第四声，是“yi”，不是”yu”（玉）
上面说完了喝彩，现在我们来学习一下“喝倒彩”怎么说。
喝倒彩英文常见有四种说法：make catcalls; jeer, boo, hoot
catcall有两个意思，一是喝倒彩时起哄的嘘声或口哨。（A shrill whistle or shout of disapproval made at a public meeting or performance.）
另一种专指路边小流氓看见女人走过时挑逗的口哨。这个好理解，取猫叫春的意思。（A loud whistle or a comment of a sexual nature made by a man to a passing woman.）
来看两个例句：
President Trump’s speech was greeted with boos and jeers. 川普总统的演讲引来一片嘘声。
He sang so badly that the audience booed him. 他唱得太烂，观众喝了倒彩。
值得注意的是，由于catcall的那层性骚扰涵义，一般场合说喝倒彩最好不说make catcalls， 容易有歧义。说boo, jeer, hoot都比较保险，并很常用。
