第263期：catch you on the flip side

今天我们来学一个很有趣的英语俗语，有些欧洲老外很喜欢说。catch you on the flip side （有时候flip side也可以连起来写作flipside）

首先，flipside的意思简单说就是the other side. 胖鹿的老板是个荷兰人，每天都喜欢说on the flipside (on the other side)，一般来说意思相当于英美英语中的on the other hand. 但是flipside还有一点微妙的不同意思：the opposite, less good, or less popular side of something.

来看一个Cambridge大词典上的例句：

We’re now starting to see the flip side of the government’s economic policy.

这句话中的the flip side表示的”另一方面“就有”另一方面不太好的地方“的意思。这和on the other hand就不同了。

Flipside这个词最早只是用在磁带盛行的年代的，指磁带的B面。人们播放磁带时一般都是从A面开始，听完再翻过来听B面。几乎所有歌曲磁带也都是把好听的歌和较好的作品录在A面，B面往往是一些稍差一点的歌。听过磁带的人都有此体会。所以上面讲的the flipside表示的less good的意思就不难理解了。

知道了flipside的“B面”意思，如果有人说I will catch you on the flip side，又是什么意思呢？

据说这句俚语最早是电台DJ们发明的，当电台主持人播完自己的那档节目时，他们习惯说“Catch you on the flip side”, 意思就是I will see/catch you later. （一会儿见）。
