第287期：鞋拔子英语怎么说？
今天我们来学一个日常生活中常见的词：shoehorn，就是鞋拔子。但佛老要讲的不仅是鞋拔子对应的英文单词这么简单。
其实鞋拔子在英语中有好几个名字，除了shoehorn，还有：shoe horn, shoespooner, shoe tongue. 最后这个shoe tongue很有意思，字面意思是“鞋舌”，挺形象的。

顺便说一下，英语中还有种类似的东西咱们没见过。叫boot jack，跟鞋拔子的作用类似，但是用来辅助脱靴子的。

从起源上说，鞋拔子这种东西可以肯定不是中国人发明的。根据百度百科的介绍，关于鞋拔子的起源，现在已很难从历史文献记载中寻觅到清晰的踪迹。迄今从汉语历史文献中所能觅得的，比较清楚记述“鞋拔子”的，是清代李光庭《乡言解颐·物部上·杂物十事》中，对“鞋拔子”一番专题阐说。
而Wikipedia对shoehorn的起源说：Shoehorns appear to have originated in the late Middle Ages or Renaissance; in English a “schoying horne” is mentioned in the 15th century.
早在15世纪英国已经普遍使用shoehorn了。至于为什么叫shoehorn，有人估计最早的鞋拔子可能是牛角（horn）做成的。Shoehorn的起源很神秘，现在没有一个权威的说法。
在现代英语中（主要是美国英语），shoehorn有了别等意思，经常用做动词，但不是拔鞋的意思了。
to fit something tightly in a particular place, often between two other things， 或者to fit something or some into a tight place. 意思是：把什么东西硬塞进什么地方去。
来看个例句：
We’d have to build another school to shoehorn all our students in. 我们得再建一所学校把学生们都塞进去。（这句里的shoehorn不一定非翻译成“塞进去”，但就是“硬塞“的意思。
再来一个例句：
He shoehorned irrelevant arguments into his essay. 他在论文里硬塞了一些不相关的论点。
Shoehorn作动词时把鞋拔子的工作原理引申出了这个生动的动作，佛老觉得蛮经典的。
