第333期：windfall 横财

《增广贤文》里有句名言，人无外财不富，马无夜草不肥。

今天我们要学的这个词就是“外财”和“夜草”的意思。临近新年，希望所有读者来年都有好财运。

Windfall这个词很明显是wind和fall两个词组合在一起的，英语中这样的构词很多。

Windfall最基本的意思就是“被风吹落在地的东西”，主要指被风吹落枝头的苹果等。想想牛顿牛师傅。（Something blown down by the wind, esp. a piece of fruit）

但windfall更常用的意思是：

A sudden large benefit; especially, a sudden or unexpected large amount of money, as from lottery or sweepstakes winnings or an unexpected inheritance or gift. （突然的一笔钱，例如中了彩票大奖或意外的遗产继承）想想电影《西虹市首富》的情节。

Etymology (词源）：

mid-15c., from wind (n.1) + fall (n.1). Originally literal, in reference to wood or fruit blown down by the wind, and thus free to all. Figurative sense of “unexpected acquisition” is recorded from 1540s.

类似的词还有：godsend, stroke of luck, manna from heaven等。

汉语中还有个俗语叫“天上不会掉馅饼”，用来警戒人们不要轻信突如其来的好运。这句俗语里的“馅饼”其实就是我们今天学的windfall. 

现在网络上有一个流传甚广的误传，说汉语里的“天上掉馅饼”可以对应英语里的pie in the sky. 请注意，这是一个错误。完全的错误。
