第334期：pie in the sky不是天上掉馅饼

昨天我们提到“天上掉馅饼”不能对应英语中的成语pie in the sky. 今天我们来近距离了解为什么不能。Pie in the sky到底是什么意思？

先看第一个意思（柯林斯字典释义）：

If you describe an idea, plan, or promise of something good as pie in the sky, you mean that you think that it is very unlikely to happen. 

简单说就是不可能发生的事。说的文雅点，就是“水中月、镜中花“、妄想。

例句：

If you’d spend more time working and less time coming up with these pie-in-the-sky fantasies, you might actually get somewhere in life!

如果你能多花点时间在工作上，少做些遥不可及的梦，你也许能有所成就。

所以你看，pie in the sky的第一层意思就好像是远在天边的一个馅饼，看得见，但够不着，形容虚妄的幻想、不可能实现的事。

汉语中常常用“空中楼阁”来表示这个意思，因此佛老想到世界七大奇迹之一的巴比伦空中花园。

巴比伦空中花园（the Hanging Gardens of Babylon）大约建于公元前6世纪（中国东周时期），是唯一一个未找到遗址的世界七大奇迹。

巴比伦空中花园大概就是这样子，当时怎么建起来的，后来怎么消失的，都没人知道。但英语中paradise（天堂）一词就是从这里来的。（此不赘述）

来学pie in the sky的第二个意思：a future reward after death, considered as a replacement for a reward not received on earth. 死后的回报

这层意思来自一首歌 “The Preacher and the Slave” ，写于1911年。

这首歌是讽刺当时的救世军组织(Salvation Army）的，讽刺这些人只关注对穷人灵魂的救赎，而无视穷人现实生活的贫苦。

歌词写道：

You will eat, bye and bye,

In that glorious land above the sky;

Work and pray, live on hay,

You’ll get pie in the sky when you die.

让人们今生忍受，换取来生的回报。这就叫pie in the sky. 一种你能看见但这辈子拿不到的奖励。大多数宗教都有类似的教义和承诺。

由于这种承诺在现世不可兑现，英语中pie in the sky又有“空头支票”的意思，类似blank check, 意思是false hopes or promises.
