第574期：Push the envelope 为什么要推信封？

今天我们来讲一个英语成语：push the envelope，字面意思是“推信封”，但实际意思跟信封没有关系。

套用一个曾经流行的句型：

What are we pushing when we push the envelope? 当我们推信封时我们在推什么？

这个成语里的envelope本来是一个数学术语“包络”。什么是包络，嘿嘿，我也不懂。我的小学数学真的是体育老师教的。

In mathematics, an envelope is the enclosing boundary of a set or family of curves that is touched by every curve in the system.

If you know what it means…

I don’t.

这个数学术语不是重点，因为这个成语里的envelope早就不再是那个数学术语了。

二战结束后，美国的航空航天事业大发展，出现了很多新研制的飞机。

每款飞机都有一个理论极限，就是各种参数的设计极限。例如最高飞行速度、最高飞行高度、大气状况、最高或最低允许气压等等。这一系列参数在航空工程领域就叫envelope.

每一款新型飞机研制出来后，都由试飞员(test pilot)驾驶飞机对这些参数进行实地测试，以此对照设计师的理论值。

这就是push the envelope这个成语的来源。

但在1979年之前，会说这个成语的仅限于航空航天领域的数学家、科学家和飞行员们，普通大众是不理解这个说法的。

直到一本书的出版：Tom Wolfe’s “The Right Stuff”（1979）

这本书才使这个原本只是科学家们的专用说法走向了大众。

今天，很多美国人都会说push the envelope这个成语。

讲清楚了来源，到底什么意思？怎么用呢？

To push the envelope is to do something to a greater degree or in a more extreme way than it has ever been done before.

再解释得简单一点，to push the envelope is to stretch the boundaries. 挑战极限、测试底线。

看个例句

If you want to make a name for yourself in the art world, then you can’t be afraid of pushing the envelope. 你如果想在艺术圈成名，就不能怕挑战极限。（挑战自我的极限）

It’s a natural stage for most teenagers to push the envelope of their parents’ rules. 大多数人在青少年时期测试/挑战过父母管束的底线，这很正常。

一般来说，push the envelope在表示“挑战自我”、“挑战极限”时是褒义，表示不满足现状，创新的意思。

但表示“试探”、“挑战某人的底线”时有贬义，就是试探底线、摸对方的底牌的意思。
