第344期：city on a hill
今天我们要讲的内容不是一个单词，而是一个经常出现在英语演讲（尤其美国总统演讲）中的说法:city on a hill或者city upon a hill，背后有段很有趣的历史。
2016年，川普当选美国总统后，前共和党总统竞选提名人罗姆尼(Romney)这样评价川普：
His domestic policies would lead to recession; his foreign policies would make America and the world less safe. He has neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president, and his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.
他的国内政策将导致衰退；他的外交政策将使美国和全世界更不安全。他不具备总统所需的性格和判断力，他的个性将意味着美国不再是一座闪光的山上之城。
2006年，奥巴马总统在波士顿大学的一次演讲中说：
It was right here, in the waters around us, where the American experiment began. As the earliest settlers arrived on the shores of Boston and Salem and Plymouth, they dreamed of building a City upon a Hill. And the world watched, waiting to see if this improbable idea called America would succeed.

1980年，里根总统在一次演讲中说：
These visitors to that city on the Potomac do not come as white or black, red or yellow; they are not Jews or Christians; conservatives or liberals; or Democrats or Republicans. They are Americans awed by what has gone before, proud of what for them is still… a shining city on a hill.

以上三位总统的演说词中提到的city upon a hill的意思都一样，指美国在自由民主方面要做全世界的标杆和模范。就像自由女神像的象征意义那样。
为什么美国的总统这么喜欢说city on a hill这个短语呢？
故事要从1630年讲起。
大家都知道“五月花”（Mayflower），是当年英国清教徒去美洲新大陆搭乘的那条船的名字。后来人们就以五月花来象征美国的开国。
但其实，五月花是1620年从英国普利茅斯开往美国马萨诸塞州普利茅斯殖民地的客船，并不是第一批开拓美国新大陆的英国人。早在1607年，英国首批拓荒者就在美国詹姆斯镇(Jameston)登陆了。
直到1630年马萨诸塞才成立了北美第一个英属殖民政府。
1630年，又一批英国清教徒乘船去美国波士顿。3月21日，大家都上了船，船上清教徒领导人John Winthrop对船上的所有人做了一个主题为“A Model of Christian Charity”（基督徒慈善之典范）的讲道(sermon)，讲道中有一小节题目叫“City upon a Hill”. 这段讲道讲了什么内容呢？
Winthrop warned his fellow Puritans that their new community would be “as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us”, meaning, if the Puritans failed to uphold their covenant with God, then their sins and errors would be exposed for all the world to see.
大意是：Ladies and 乡亲们，我们马上就要去美国新大陆了。我们可是带着上帝的神圣使命去的。大伙儿到了那儿，要记得波士顿将是一座建在山顶的城市，我们的所作所为那里的老百姓都会看见。所以，如果有人行为不端，全世界都会看着我们。
主要精神就这个意思。Winthrop的用意是警告大家到了美国要努力工作，去拓荒，去传播文明，传播福音，造福未开化的新大陆当地人民。不要胡作非为，有损上帝的荣耀。
City on a hill这个说法并不是Winthrop发明的，而是出自新约圣经马太福音第5章第14节：
詹姆士国王钦定版本(King James Version)圣经英文版是这样记载的：
Ye are the light of the world. A city
that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
正是因为这段著名的布道，波士顿这个城市获得了一个外号：The city on a hill.
*美国的很多城市都有nickname，而且大多不止一个外号。波士顿的其他nickname还有：
The Hub (宇宙枢纽)
The Athens of America 美国的雅典
The Puritan City 清教徒之城
The Cradle of Liberty 自由的摇篮
America’s Walking City 美国步行之都
Beantown 豆城（波士顿最出名的食物是煮豆子）
以上每个外号背后都有一段故事。限于篇幅，今天我们就不讲太多了。
