第469期：Mother’s Day 聊聊母亲节

佛老没有朋友圈，但可以想象今天朋友圈里肯定“母亲节”的文章满天飞。佛老也来跟个风，希望跟他们不太一样。

你知道吗？大约有一半美国人把Mother’s Day错写为Mothers’ Day. 还有人写成Mothers Day. 都不对。100多年前Anna Jarvis倡议建立母亲节时，是献给她自己就的妈妈的，只能写成Mother’s Day.

Some fun facts about Mother’s Day:

  • Mother’s Day is the third most popular holiday in the world, behind only Christmas and Easter.
  • Around one-quarter of all flowers purchased throughout the year are purchased for Mother’s Day.
  • Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year for the restaurant industry with 62% of Americans dining out.
  • In the vast majority of the world’s languages, the word for “mother” begins with the letter M.
  • Among gifts that the majority of moms like to receive on their holiday are: 1. flowers, 2. jewellery and 3. candies.

Mother这个英语单词出处不详，但世界上绝大多数语言中“妈妈”这个词都以M（或类似M的音节）开头，可见是人类的一个共性。

在Quora上读到两位网友对Mother的解读，觉得很好，转载如下：

“M” is for the million things she gave me,
“O” means only that she’s growing old,
“T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
“H” is for her heart of gold,
“E” is for her eyes with love-light shining in them,
“R” means right , and right she’ll always be,

Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER”

A word that means the world to me.

在这个伟大的节日，理应向天下所有的母亲祝福，包括但不限于以下所有种类的妈妈：

biological mothers 生母

adoptive mothers 养母

putative mothers 推定母亲（指未确认母子关系的生母）

stepmothers 继母

surrogate mothers 代孕妈妈

如果胸怀再大一点，还应该包括mothers in same-sex relationships，不过他们/她们似乎与这个节日不太有关了。
