第474期：I.M.Pei died at 102 贝聿铭先生辞世

今天世界各大媒体头条都刊登了贝聿铭先生辞世的新闻，今天我们这期小文献给这位伟大的建筑师：Mr. I.M. Pei, 贝聿铭先生。

三言两语介绍一下Mr. Pei. 贝聿铭先生生于广东，成长于上海、香港，1935年18岁时移民美国，因此他的名字在英语中使用了广东话音译：Ieoh Ming Pei. 常缩写为I.M.Pei. 来到美国后，先入宾夕法尼亚大学建筑系，后转学到麻省理工学院(MIT），大学毕业后入哈佛大学设计系深造。

贝聿铭的成名作品是1961年设计的美国国家大气研究中心（National Center for Atmospheric Research）的Mesa实验室。

贝先生的作品遍布世界各地，最出名的当属The Louvre Pyramid.

但对佛老来说，贝先生为台湾东海大学校园内设计的路思义教堂是我唯一亲自看过的建筑杰作。

建筑师的英文是architect, 这是一个源自希腊语的词，(arkhi-, chief + tekton, builder), i.e., ，由表示“首席”的前缀加上表示“建造”的词干组合而成，意思就是 chief builder.

建筑师(architect)和设计师（designer）不一样，简单地说，建筑设计只是建筑师工作的一部分。An architect is a person who designs buildings and in many cases also supervises their construction. 建筑师不仅负责设计，还负责监督和把控整个建筑过程。

If you become an architect, you’ll be responsible for drawing the
blueprints, planning the work, and sometimes even overseeing the
construction of a building.

由architect派生出了另一个词 architecture，意思是建筑风格或架构。
