第476期：你完蛋了，英语怎么说？

“你完蛋了”、“你糗大了”，这句话用英语怎么说？你肯定知道可以说 You are finished. 这是最简单的说法。今天我们来讲一个更生动的说法：You are toast. 是一句非常地道的英语成语。

Toast这个词大家都认识，名词常音译成“土司”，就是面包片。作这个意思时其实是 toasted bread的缩略形式。toast就是“烤面包”这个动作，所以中文说的吐司面包片实质就是烤面包片。佛老有一次带一个美国小青年去吃路边摊烧烤，他看见烤馒头片问我那是什么，当时我随口说是 Chinese toast. 他秒懂。

Toast的另一个常见意思是“祝酒”，既是动词，又是名词。

例如：

Let’s toast the bride and groom. 我们来敬新郎新娘一杯。（这里的toast是及物动词）

I’d like to propose a toast to the bride and groom. 我敬新郎新娘一杯。（这里的toast是名词，前面基本都是propose）

西方的toast通常要说一段话，不像咱们一样就一个字——干！我觉得中国人中最会toast的是东北人，说辞一套一套的，像什么“感情深一口闷，感情浅舔一舔”都是toast时说的话。

*这里插入一个小知识点：西方礼仪中敬酒时一定要用右手举杯，不能用左手。因为西方文化一般认为左手举杯会给对方带来厄运，不吉利。

下面是我们今天要讲的 be toast 的用法和意思。

来看个例句先：

Bob really made a bad mistake yesterday by yelling at his boss. He is toast.

翻译：Bob昨天翻了个大错，他冲老板大吼。他完了。（意思是，他得罪了老板，估计要被开除了。）

If someone tells you that you are toast, you are in a lot of trouble.

If someone is toast, you mean that they are certain to be defeated or destroyed.

上面这两个英语解释很清楚了吧。

You are toast. 意思就是“你完了”、“完了，你糗大了”、“你惨了”。

你当然可以说You are finished. 或 You are screwed. 或 You are in trouble. 或You are in shit. 意思都差不多，但没有You are toast. 生动传神。
