第487期：spitting image 一个模子刻出来的

今天我们要讲一个英语成语：spitting image，常见的用法是A is the spitting image of B. 意思是A和B长得很像，就像一个模子里刻出来的一样。很多朋友都知道这个成语，但我们今天要讲的是它的出处。英语为什么有这么古怪的一个成语？

首先声明，这篇小文只是探讨，无法讲清楚spitting image真正的出处。因为这是一个英语语言学/词源学上都没有答案的问题。本文讲解两个主要的说法，但截至目前未有定论。

先来看spitting image的英语释义：

Spitting image is the exact likeness.

To be the spitting image of someone is to look exactly like someone.

关于这个成语的出处，一般有两种说法。

第一种说法认为出自圣经中上帝造人的方法，说取了上帝用唾沫和尘土按照自己的形象创造了亚当之意。

The original phrase was spit and image, inspired by the Biblical God‘s use of spit and mud to create Adam in his image.

但这个说法的问题在于，圣经上并没有写上帝具体是怎么造的亚当。

圣经创世纪第二章第7节(Genesis 2:7）说在上帝创造宇宙的第六天：then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

上面只说了上帝使用地上的土创造了亚当，并没说用唾液和土捏成了亚当。

所以，这个说法不合理。

第二种说法认为这个成语最早是spirit and image（精神和外形、内在和外在），后来说白了才成了spitting image.

Well, 这个也有点牵强了。

其实很多英语成语的出处已经无法考证了，大可不必过分纠结源头的问题。学会使用就好了。来看个例句，一下子学会用这个成语。

She is the spitting image of her mother. 她长得酷似母亲。

就这么简单。

讲到这里，想到汉语中的一个成语“不肖子孙”。很多人误以为是“不孝子孙”，其实应该是“不肖”。

不肖就是不像的意思，指不像祖先（那么好）。不像祖先就是不好，没能把祖先的德行传扬下去。这是汉语不肖子孙的意思。中国古人把不如先人的后辈称为不肖。

讲完了spitting image，我们再来学几个跟spit有关的习惯用语。

Spit的名词就是唾液、唾沫；动词是吐唾沫。英语中有很多spit相关的习惯用语，很有意思。

例如：

spit it out — 有话就说。有什么话尽管说出来。

It you’ve got something to say, spit it out! 有什么话，你尽管说出来！

within sptting distance，字面意思是“在唾沫可及的距离中”，意思就是very close. 近得连对方说话时的唾沫星子都能喷到脸上。

还有个说法：spit and polish，哈哈这个很形象，意思是“彻底擦洗”（thorough cleaning and polishing of something. 可以想象一个给主人擦皮鞋的仆人，害怕擦不亮，就吐一口口水再接着擦。所以也可以说spit shine（动词），可以翻译成“把……擦得锃亮“。
