第640期：Wrong side？哪一边才是wrong side?

今天我们来聊一个有趣的英语现象：wrong side.

有很多英语成语和习惯用语中都有wrong side这个词，意思不一样，但都很有趣。

例如1:

Woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

字面意思：从床错误的一侧起的床。

It is typically used to describe a grumpy or irritable person, especially when the reason for their unhappiness is unknown.

如果一个人某天突然很狂躁，像吃了枪药似的，不知为什么总爱发火、生气，好像全世界都对不起他，这时候你就可以形容他是 Woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

例句：

He can’t stop shouting at me: he must have woken up on the wrong side of bed this morning.

由于汉语中没有这个说法，所以在翻译时需要根据上下文考虑一下口气。

上面这个例句我认为可以翻译成：他不停吼我，真是莫名其妙，吃错了药了。

在英语中，床的哪一侧才是wrong side呢？

答案是：左侧。

据说这是一个源自古罗马的迷信，认为所有左边、左侧都是不吉利的。古罗马甚至很多人连穿鞋都刻意先穿右脚的鞋，因为左边不吉利。

这个传统迷信观念就是这句英语成语的来源。

关于wrong side的第二个例子是英国人喜欢说的“wrong side of the road”.

佛老以前有个英国老板，每次来中国出差跟我一起坐车时就喜欢说 You guys are driving on the wrong side of the road.

其实这是一句玩笑话，说“你们这些人怎么都在马路错误的一边开车？”指靠右开车的习惯。

在日不落帝国鼎盛时代，世界上很多国家都学习了英国靠左驾驶的习惯，但现在除了几个英联邦国家，靠右驾驶是主流了。

第三个例子也是一句英语成语：on the wrong side of [age].

例如：

Folao is on the wrong side of 40.  佛老已经40多了。

这个好玩：一个年龄的右侧(更大年龄）就是the wrong side，左侧(更年轻）就是the right side咯。

表达了人们都怕老的一种心态吧，只是个俏皮的说法，这个成语没有on the right side的说法。

If someone is on the wrong side of forty, fifty etc, they are older than forty, fifty etc.

佛老昨晚半夜才出差回来，没睡好，今天脾气不好。开车去上班，到处堵车，火大。想想自己已经40几岁了，还没当过总统，不开心。
