第746期：世界上只有一种完美的东西一点都不完美

如果一个东西或一件事很完美，我们一般称之为 perfect.

但有一种被称为完美的东西不仅不完美，而且一点都不美。

今天这一期我们要讲的词是：perfect storm 完美风暴

不知道谁翻译的这个词，真是个望文生义的失败经典。

1997年，Sebastian Junger出版了一本书，讲了一条渔船在海上遭遇了几个风暴和在一起的特级大风暴的故事。

2000年，好莱坞拍了一部电影，讲的就是这场特大风暴。

这起载入了人类灾难史册的超强特大风暴就发生在1991年的美国，完整的名字叫 the 1991 Halloween Nor’easter storm

从此之后，perfect storm 这个才开始流行起来，并被赋予了很多引申的含义。

A perfect storm is an unusual combination of events or things that produce an unusually bad or powerful result.

简单说就是很多糟糕多事同时发生，形容一个特别糟糕，简直无法更糟的情景。

这个意思就是从那条渔船的故事引申来的，几个大风暴一起袭来，不同灾难接踵而至，这种情形在英语中就叫 perfect storm.

中文常说“祸不单行”，英语说 Misfortunes never come alone; 还有个英语成语叫 It never rains but it pours. 对应的就是这个汉语成语。

假如一个社会经济停滞、物价高涨、房事低迷，对投资者而言，就可以叫做 perfect storm了。

例句：

Investors are faced with the perfect storm of slowing economic growth, rising prices
and an unstable housing market.

但牛津字典不同意上面这个词源说法。

OED认为早在1718年英语中就有perfect storm这个说法了，这里的perfect意思不是完美，而是absolute, complete，跟perfect stranger（彻底的陌生人，完全不认识，连一面都没见过）中的perfect一样。

例如，William Makepeace Thackeray（萨克雷）在《名利场》（Vanity Fair）中就用了这个词：

…and they and the poet together would burst out into a roar of oaths and
execrations against the fictitious monster of the tale, so that the hat
went round, and the bajocchi tumbled into it, in the midst of a perfect
storm of sympathy.

我也不知道上面两种说法哪个对，但我基本同意OED说的perfect等于absolute, complete的解释。

这样看来，perfect storm其实不应该翻译成“完美风暴”，而应该翻译成“最强风暴”或类似的意思。

但perfect storm这个词在当代英语中基本都不再指风暴本身了，而是指很多坏事或灾难同时发生的情况，是the worst-case scenario.

再看几个例句：

The past five years have been a perfect storm of low interest rates, easy credit, and rising household costs.

Now comes the perfect storm of avian, swine, and human flu, just in time for a national health plan.

2018年伊波拉再次肆虐西非的时候，世卫组织（WHO）说过这样一句话：

A “perfect storm” of conflict and political manipulation is making it
ever harder to fight a growing outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic
Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

WHO为什么把刚果爆发的伊波拉称为 a perfect storm？因为当时的情况是不仅有疫情，还有当地从未停止的军事和政治冲突，给国际救援和疫情防治造成了极大的困难。

这就是 perfect storm的意思，你觉得应该怎么翻译才准确呢？

前几天成都地震时，我心里一惊就想到了这个词，联想到2020年以来世界各地发生的各种灾难，我真的害怕全人类正在面临一场前所未有的perfect storm.
