第850期：谈话中不能碰的”高压线“

你肯定也感觉到了，现在跟人谈话越来越难。很多话题不能提，一提就会引发争论甚至谩骂，最后不欢而散或心生龃龉。

每个人的知识结构和价值观不尽相同，在谈话中有意见分歧和讨论甚至争论很正常。但如果大家的认知和三观差异太大，我的策略和建议是谢绝这种谈话。因为毫无营养和意义，用我的话说，耽误我看书。

今天我们就来认识一个非常贴切的英语词汇 the third rail，意思就是这种不能触碰的话题，汉语口语中常称之为”高压线“，比喻一碰就有危险。

The third rail的字面意思是第三根轨道。本意还真的就是指第三根轨道，电气化火车，尤其地铁的第三根铁轨。

A third rail, also known as a live rail, electric rail or conductor rail, is a method of providing electric power to a railway locomotive or train, through a semi-continuous rigid conductor placed alongside or between the rails of a railway track. (Wikipedia)

第三根轨道就是给火车头(locomotive)输送电力的那根轨道，一般铺设在火车轨道外侧或者两根轨道中间。

下次你在火车站或地铁站可以观察一下。

1982年，里根总统期间，美国众议院的一个议员第一次赋予了the third rail一个引申义，用来指当时美国的社会敏感话题 social security（社保）。

为什么这样引申呢？

因为the third rail是输电轨，带电的，一碰就会被电到。所以用来比喻某些有争议性的政治或社会话题，说的是那些话题不能碰，一碰就会产生激烈的争论和冲突。

怎么样，这个比喻是不是很形象？是不是完全对应中文里的“高压线”的意思？

这些third rail of politics不一定都是 taboo（禁忌话题），只是说很有争议性。一说就会分成两派，各执一词莫衷一是。

这种话题几乎每个国家都有，例如美国的禁枪问题(gun control)、堕胎合法化问题(legalization of abortion)、加拿大的pension plan问题、英国的National health service改革问题、新加坡的同性恋合法化问题、还有很多国家之间的领土归属问题，等等等等。
