第889期：空转轮胎和轮盘赌 – She was spinning her wheels

早上开车上班路上很堵，见一辆车一侧后轮陷进路边一个水坑里，空转了半天也出不来。

当时想到一个英语成语：spin one’s wheels 空转轮胎，意思就是白费劲。

To waste one’s time or energy idly or frivolously; to neither progress nor regress, but remain in a fixed, neutral position.

例句：

We haven’t been able to do anything new until more funding comes in, so the project is just spinning its wheels for the moment.

这个表达方法很形象，你可以记住并经常使用。

需要注意两点：

– Spin one’s wheels 这个说法里的 one’s 不能省略

– wheels必须是复数形式

注意跟另一个英语说法容易混淆：spin the wheel 转轮盘

Spin the wheel 的意思是撞大运，take a chance或者give it a try without knowing the outcome，跟roll the dice（掷色子）的意思类似。

八十年代小学校门口都有卖糖人和小零食的小摊，就有这种转盘。我小学门口那个摊上，一毛钱转五次轮盘，指针指到什么你就得到什么。我记得最大的奖项是一把水枪。

从spin one’s wheels，想到了spin the wheel，又想到了spinning wheel 纺车。

年轻的读者肯定都没见过纺车，佛老小时候我奶奶还经常用纺车纺棉线。
