第1087期：天网恢恢，肥而不腻 – the mills of the gods

标题是讲笑，是郭德纲说的。今天我要讲的就是这句成语——天网恢恢，疏而不漏。

这句话出自《老子》，一般只用于不好的事，意思是作恶的人最终逃脱不了上天的制裁。

这句成语怎么翻译成英语呢？我看过很多版本，都不好。

其实不用翻译，英语中有现成对应的说法—— the mills of the gods grind slowly, (but they grind exceedingly fine). 神的磨盘转得很慢，但磨得非常细。

后半句一般不说出来，所以我加了括号。

简单几个小注解：

mill 就是磨坊或磨盘，磨面的那种东西，东西方古代都有，都是早期农业基础加工工具。

grind 就是磨的这个动作。

还有一点要注意：这句话里 mills 和 gods 都是复数形式。因为这句话最早出自希腊语，希腊神话是崇拜多神的，所以是 gods.

不过也有把这句话说成 the mills of God的，这是传入英语后产生的一个变体。God大写是基督教、天主教特指上帝的。

例如毛姆在《月亮和六便士》里面写道：“The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small, he said, somewhat impressively.”

毛姆的这个说法是另一种轻微的变体，里面的小词有所不同，但这句话的整体结构和主要元素不变——上帝的磨盘（the mills of the gods or God）。

这句话怎么理解呢？

• Destiny will deliver an outcome that is correct, just, and inevitable, though it may take a long time to come to be.
  如果你相信命运，相信一切都已注定，那么该来的总会来，只不过可能会来得晚一些。

例如：

It was a disheartening verdict, to be sure, but we aren’t losing hope for a successful outcome eventually. The mills of the gods grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine.

对判决不满意的人仍然坚信上诉后最终会得到公正的裁决，相信天道循环，报应不爽。

• One’s destiny or one’s deserved fate may not come fast, but it will arrive eventually.
  是你的总会是你的，不是你的就不是。所谓命中只有九升九，跑遍天下不满斗的道理。
