第1131期：拜登一个词难死翻译，他说的 Neanderthal Thinking 什么意思？
前天（Mar 3），拜登掉了个书袋，公开说了一个很冷的词：Neanderthal thinking，批评德克萨斯州和密西西比州决定不再要求人们戴口罩的做法。
拜登的原话是：
“The last thing — the last thing — we need is the Neanderthal thinking that in the meantime, everything’s fine, take off your mask. Forget it.
It still matters.”
如果他跟一个外国政要说这句话，我估计翻译会当然卡壳，什么是 Neanderthal thinking？今天我们就来聊聊这个高大上的词。
拜登的人设（public persona）一向是比较文雅的，说话措辞比较谨慎，跟川普形成鲜明的对比。但前天他说的 Neanderthal thinking 就有点不文雅了，有点接近骂人了，不太符合他一贯的做派。
- 先说说什么是 Neanderthal ([niˈæn dərˌtɔl]).
这是个人类学（anthropology）术语：尼安德特人。
*尼安德特人（学名：Homo neanderthalensis，简称尼人）是一群生存于旧石器时代的史前人类，1856 年，其遗迹首先在德国尼安德河谷被发现。（Wikipedia)
因为在德国尼安德特河谷被发现，所以叫尼安德特人。可以对比中国的周口店人、元谋人等。
尼安德特人是现在人类之前的一个人种，现在的人类这一支学名叫“智人”（Homo sapiens）。据说相当一部分现代人类就是尼安德特人和智人杂交的后代。
- 什么是 Neanderthal thinking（尼安德特人的想法）呢？
A neanderthal is someone who is rude and not very smart. 作为人类的早期始祖的一支，尼安德特人一般被认为是智力不足、粗鲁，没有现代文明的形象。说白了就是野人、原始人，caveman的意思。
Neanderthal thinking的意思也就不难理解了——野蛮人的想法，简直就是 barbaric, primitive, noncivilised.
拜登对媒体公开这样批评停止戴口罩的州，语气很重。但美国联邦政府权力并不大，很多事情管不了州政府。密西西比州长就在推特上怼拜登说：“no insults from the President will stop us from leaning towards freedom.”
