第1146期：土豆烧牛肉在英语中的文化意涵

今天周末，再来讲个吃的东西，也是一句英语中的习惯用语或成语：meat and potatoes. 

字面看是“肉和土豆”，这里的 meat 没说是牛肉、羊肉还是猪肉，但根据欧洲的饮食主流传统推断应该主要指牛肉。

Meat and potatoes 在英语中什么意思呢？当然不是字面的意思。

主要意思和用法有两个：

• 形容事物时，meat and potatoes是最根本、最基础的部分和内容。
  例如：

  Too much information will overwhelm the new hire, so just give him the meat and potatoes. 刚报到的新员工一下子接受不了太多信息，跟他们讲一下主要事项就好了。
  *这个语境下的 meat and potatoes 就是 the most basic or fundamental aspects of something.

• 形容人时，meat and potatoes 类似朴实无华的意思。
  例如：He is a real meat-and-potatoes guy. 
  *这句话要根据具体语境翻译。大家在阅读英文文学作品时如果遇到可以仔细把玩一下。

为什么 meat and potatoes 有这层意思呢？

这个说法据说源自一句古老的英语谚语：Life, it explained, is meat and potatoes, and the luxuries are gravy.

*gravy 就是肉汁，炖肉产生的那种肉汤。

我没查证这句谚语的出处，但理解大意是说生活就像一锅炖肉，肉和土豆是主要内容，如果再浇上一勺肉汤就更好了。

真是欧洲特色的一句话啊，如果放在中国文化语境下，我觉得大多数人生活的主要内容也许并不是土豆烧牛肉，而是大饼豆浆油条鸡蛋小炒肉大米饭小米粥馒头花卷饺子年糕吧。

人首先是动物，只有先吃饱了肚子，才顾得上考虑其他的事。不管是土豆烧牛肉还是其他什么，meat and potatoes 就是最主要的内容，the basics, the fundamentals.
