第1183期：白手套和 white glove，中英文化意涵完全不同

同一个事物在不同文化或不同语境下可以指完全不同的东西，这个现象很普遍。

今天只说一个——中文里的“白手套”一词和英文里的 white glove 完全不同的文化意涵。

“白手套”在中国大陆特殊的语境下指的是身居要职或高位，利用合法身份充当“黑钱”漂白的中间人。不方便多讲，想必你懂的。

英文中也有 white glove 的说法，但意思完全不同。英文中 white glove 一般出现在 white glove service 这样的短语中。

什么是 white glove service（“白手套”服务）？

简单说就是非常细致、贴心的服务，形容服务人员戴着干净的白色手套为你服务那种谨慎和认真的样子。

物流行业特别喜欢这个词，一度很流行，货运公司喜欢标榜自己 handle your shipments with the utmost care，这就叫 white glove service. 

White glove 为什么有这个象征意义呢？大概是过去的欧洲贵族家里的管家都戴白色的手套的原因，White gloves are a primary characteristic of the classic English butler’s uniform.

直到今天，上海的很多老牌出租车司机开车时还戴着白手套，那就是一种过去高级服务的腔调。

顺便想到另一个说法 red carpet treatment（红地毯待遇），意思是最高规格的接待待遇和礼仪（lavish hospitality; a royal welcome）
