If you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep,

you are richer than 75 percent of the world.

If you have money in your bank, your wallet, and some spare change,

you are among 8 percent of the world’s wealthy.

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness,

you are more blessed than the million people who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the agony of imprisonment or torture or the horrible pangs of starvation,

you are luckier than 500 million people alive and suffering.

If you can read this message,

you are more fortunate than 3 billion people in the world who cannot read at all.

What is hunger?

  • Hunger is the distress associated with lack of food.
  • The threshold for food deprivation, or undernourishment, is fewer than 1,800 calories per day.

Facts about hunger

  • In 2020, between 720 and 811 million people faced hunger
  • In 2030, around 660 million people may still face hunger

What causes hunger?

  • Poverty – Most people who are hungry are living in extreme poverty, defined as income of $1.90 per day or less.
  • Food Shortages and Waste – Nearly one in three people in the world (2.37 billion) did not have access to adequate food in 2020
  • Climate Change – This is the greatest environmental challenge the world has ever faced.
  • War and Conflict – In 2020, conflict was the primary driver of hunger for 99.1 million people in 23 countries.

Do we have enough food for everyone on earth?

  • Yes

Then why is there hunger?

  • Hunger is caused by poverty and inequality, not scarcity. (Eric Holt-Gimenez)

The world already produces more than 1 ½ times enough food to feed everyone on the planet.

That’s enough to feed 10 billion people, the population peak we expect by 2050.

But the people making less than $2 a day — most of whom are resource-poor farmers cultivating unviably small plots of land — can’t afford to buy this food. (– https://www.huffpost.com/entry/world-hunger_b_1463429)
