”One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth forever. . . . The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to the place where he arose. . . . The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. . . . All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.” – Ecclesiastes(圣经《传道书》)

The sun also rises, and the sun goes down.

海明威的编辑说这段引文包含了人类古代文明的全部智慧(”it contained all the wisdom of the ancient world.”)

这段话描述了我们所处的这个世界的一个真相和亘古不变的事实——everything is changing, everything is repeating, nothing is new.

Nothing is different today, or tomorrow. Everything is the same as it’s always been.

You are just like the people who came to and left this world before you. You are no different from the people who will come after you. You, and they, and they, all of us, stop briefly in this world and keep going to our destiny.

The earth abides forever, but we will come and go.
