第1741期：How to “eat” an elephant?
I know. But hear me out.
别被今天的题目吓到，这是一句英文谚语，不是真的要吃大象。为防止动物保护激进主义者较真儿，我还特意给 eat 加了引号。还不放心，索性模仿著名的AHA（American Humane Association)的 No animals were harmed 声明也做一则声明如下（just for fun）。

我第一次看到 How to eat an elephant 这句话是在南非大主教图图的一本书中读到的。 Desmond Tutu once wisely said that “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.”
这句谚语的意思很简单，就是说一件事情不论多复杂，要解决就得一点一点一步一步来。字面意思就是要吃下一头大象，总得一口一口吃。
其实跟大象没有直接关系，只是用了大象来指代巨大、艰巨的任务而已。至于为什么用大象来比喻，大概只是因为大象是大多数人在自然界里能想到和接触到的最大只的动物吧。
英文中表达类似意思的谚语还有两个更常见的：
- Rome wasn’t built in a day. 常翻译成“xx非一日之功”
- Don’t bite off more than you can chew. 贪多嚼不烂、一口吃不成个胖子（who told you?）
今天我们讲的这句谚语出处不详，也有说出自美国将军General Creighton Abrams之口的。有兴趣的读者可自行考证，此不赘述。
其实英文里有不少谚语和成语都跟elephant有关，试举几例，看看你知道几个：
- White elephant (参见第715期） An unwanted or useless item
- Elephant in the room （参见第357期） an obvious problem or risk that no one wants to discuss
- see pink elephants 酒后的幻觉
- kill a fly with an elephant gun 杀鸡用牛刀，小题大做
- have the memory of an elephant/an elephant never forgets 据说大象记忆超群（我还听说大象的听觉格外灵敏，灵敏到什么程度呢？据说一头大象能听见云从远处飘来的声音。）
- Blind men and an elephant 盲人摸象的寓言故事（Each blind man feels a different part of the elephant’s body, but only one part, such as the side or the tusk.）

这样看来，这个脑筋急转弯并不完全庸俗，多少还跟今天讲的这句英文谚语有点暗合呢。
