第1196期：聊聊英语中的那些法语词

英语中有很多法语词。大家都知道原因是历史上的“诺曼征服”（the Norman invasion of England in 1066）。

英语中总共有多少法语词呢？可能没有一个准确数字，但这么说吧，一个普通的英语母语人士基本上都认识1500个左右法语词，不用专门学习或查字典。

不管你有没有学过法语，只要你学英语，就逃不开无处不在的法语词。

我在平时工作中最常使用的几个来自法语的英语词如下：

venue 场所（例如 meeting venue，就是一件事发生的地点）
liaison 联系人（发音是：lɪˈeɪzɒn/）
Bon voyage（用于道别，have a good journey的意思）
Cliché（这个以前讲过，参见 – 第1004期：When clieche has become a cliche 英语中陈词滥调的陈词滥调）
Déjà vu（这个以前也讲过，参见 – 第838期：三种神奇的似曾相识，你经历过几种？）
En route （途中，在路上）
rendezvous （会面）*这个今天重点讲一下

其他还有很多，你可能没有意识到 hotel, machine, utensil, uniform, literature, novel, aviation等这些词都来自法语。

今天只想讲讲 rendezvous 这个词，我自己很喜欢用，但很少听到国人用的。

Rendezvous 在法语中最早的意思是军队的集结点（a place for assembling of troops），后来引申为普通人尤其熟人之间的碰头、会合、见面（a meeting planned at a certain time and place）。这个见面的地点也叫 rendezvous point，但后面加上一个point就听起来不那么French了。

在现代英语中，rendezvous 的意思更加复杂，不仅指普通的碰头、会面，更特指人与人之间秘密的见面，例如情人之间，这时候翻译成“幽会”最合适。

用英语解释这个意思就是 A rendezvous is a meeting, often a secret one, that you have arranged with someone for a particular time and place.
Rendezvous还可以做动词，意思是跟人在事先约定的地点秘密见面。

例如：The police arranged to rendezvous with their informant at a disused warehouse.
